It’s A Thing 5.14.21

  1. We’ve finally arrived back in NC! It was a long trip but Colby was a champ in the car and we made great time. I am very excited that Colby has finally hit the weight/height limit for the rear-facing setting on his car seat. This weekend I’ll be taking the whole thing apart to clean it and set it up in the front-facing position.
Mother’s Day Walk 🙂

2. I just started watching Ginny & Georgia on Netflix and am having a blast. It’s a fun show!

3. My mother and sister both have the Dyson V8 Animal Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner, and, oh wow, am I obsessed! It is incredible how powerful they are and the multitude of attachments makes cleaning any part of the house super fun. Colby is obsessed with cleaning and loves to switch out the attachments for us. So we bought him his own kids version, which he was lukewarm about. He really loves the expensive one that actually works. I should have seen this coming last year when he announced his first word: BROOM!

4. I read I Will Judge You by Your Bookshelf this week, it’s a fun graphic novel about reading, writing, and judgment. It’s filled with one and two page comics by writer-artist Grant Snider. Given the title, I was a little surprised that so much of the book focused on writing, but still enjoyed it.

5. Very excited to start a new CSA farm box subscription next week with a local farm.

1. A coworker of mine put together this google doc of organizations related to the covid relief effort in India. I’ve definitely had moments over the last year of being paralyzed by choice when it comes to where I can send money or how my time is best spent volunteering. I’m always happy when someone I trust does the research and passes along opportunities that I know I can feel good about.

2. I recently started following The Fashion Magpie and Jennifer has had a few articles that have really hit home for me lately. This one on raising a child during the pandemic and this one on building friendships during motherhood (see also this great piece from Romper on a similar subject) have both given voice to uncomfortable feelings I haven’t had the words for.

3. My friend Claire started a blog all about sustainability and low-cost and low-impact living. She is a new parent, too, so it’s been cool to see what ways she’s finding to consciously raise a kid with those values in mind. I especially appreciated this post on quitting Amazon, a thing I have yet to decide to officially pull the plug on, but often toy with the idea of.

4. I really appreciated this simple conversation starter on talking to kids about transgender and non-binary individuals. We’ve been trying to be more intentional about bringing stories centering trans and non-binary lives into our home in an effort to normalize and celebrate it starting from an early age with Ernie. (Plug: I really love the book BunnyBear and it’s one of Ernie’s favorites, too!)

5. I’ve been working on my work-from-home setup lately and have been seeking out inspiration from other people who are working with limited spaces. This roundup from Design Milk was a good start!
