It’s A Thing 9.4.20

- I was unexpectedly excited to find a green caterpillar on my walk this morning that looks just like Heimlich from A Bug’s Life.
- My husband and I usually can only figure out movie night about once a week. Most nights we are so exhausted from parenting + work from home that we fall asleep immediately. But it’s always a rare treat when we do get to watch something and I’m always glad when we end up picking out something good. This week we both really enjoyed Bad Education with Hugh Jackman, Allison Janney, and Ray Romano.
- My almost 10-month old son is obsessed with this lift the flap book. I think we average about 10 reads per day. Very happy to have found this easy go-to for entertainment.
- I’ve been daydreaming a lot about traveling lately (read: always). Currently eyeing this new hotel. Sigh.

- I got a lot out of listening to the Nice White Parents podcast that wrapped a couple of weeks ago. It’s a six-part podcast series that looks at the relationship between public school systems and white parents who have seemingly good intentions but often adverse impacts. The series looks at one Brooklyn school in particular over a 60 year period and it’s eye-opening to see the havoc that those good intentions can wreak.
- By way of gifts, hand-me-downs, street finds, and my Buy Nothing group, I have somehow made it to 16 months of having a baby before buying him any new toys. I broke the seal with this Velcro food set and this wooden clock puzzle. The foods have been a huge success, we cut up “fruit salad” most days; the clock is taking a bit more work, but I think it will get a lot of use later on when numbers and time actually mean something! Have definitely been inspired in these toy additions as well as lots of other activities with “toys” we already had around our house by some fun Instagram follows — @peace.and.toddlers, @montessori_madre, @babyplayhacks, and @montikids to name a few.
- Really appreciated this rundown on scoring good finds for toddlers on Poshmark. I’ve also been lucky that we’ve had a lot of hand-me-down clothes and have had to buy Ernie very little for his wardrobe. I think we’re hitting a point where I’ll have to supplement a bit more, and I’d love to get bundles on Poshmark as opposed to buying new.
- So excited to hear that The Great British Baking Show is making a comeback. I’m very impressed that they had a great British baking bubble!
