Learning About the FIRE Movement with the ChooseFI Podcast

At the tail end of my pregnancy last year, I started feeling super overwhelmed by all of the pregnancy and baby knowledge that I was consuming and needed a break. The ChooseFI podcast was recommended to me by a coworker (who had also just become a dad) and I decided to give it a listen on my commute. After giving it a try, I quickly fell in love with this inspiring show and now it has given my husband and me a big fire (pun intended) under our butts to get in gear and be even more financially aware than we already were. Especially with a baby on the way, we wanted to make sure our money life was on track before we got distracted 🙂

My colleague recommended that I start with Episode 100. This episode outlines the basics of the FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) Movement and showcases the pillars of FI. It’s a set of guidelines on how to spend less with lifestyle changes and how to make more money with passive investing. Many of the items outlined in this episode I was already doing. But I loved the way the hosts spoke passionately about these strategies and I certainly picked up a few new tricks.

I liked it enough that I decided to start back with episode 1 and quickly binged my way through ~100 episodes. Given my hour-long commute in both directions and my instant love for the show, I’d often listen to more than one episode a day.

Since the show started back in 2016, they’ve gathered a huge following. I loved starting the journey with them (even though I was late to the game) with the first episode and love that I still have many more to go to catch up. Eventually, I started listening to some of the more recent ones so that I could hear their take on current financial events, but I still go back to the early episodes so that one day I can say I’ve listened to all 300 of them.

The FIRE movement isn’t just about retiring early to get out of working a 9 to 5 job but more about having the financial freedom to live the life you want whatever shape that might take. I highly recommend this show and all of the subsequent products that they’ve created as well.
