I love leading an active lifestyle and have a pretty dedicated workout routine at home, mixing runs, hikes, and different classes (yoga is my favorite, but I love trying other new ones, too!). However, when it comes to traveling, whether for work or pleasure, it is very easy for me to make myriad excuses to skip workouts and fall out of the routine. Because I know this about myself, I always try to scope out what could be my workout plan during a trip. Is there a yoga or spin studio nearby I could try out? How about a local running route or new hike to visit? If all else fails, I’ve become pretty good at “hotel room yoga,” using a towel as a mat! Here are three ways to get your workout in while you’re away from home base.
- Explore on the Move: Many hotels are jumping on the fitness bandwagon by offering running route cards at the front desk or complimentary “run concierges” that can recommend local run clubs or their favorite routes nearby. I love going for runs in a new city because it’s a great way to explore and see things you might otherwise miss. If you’re not a runner, walking can fulfill this just as well. Block out an hour post-coffee, pre-conference to just wander and find some fun local haunts!
- Hold Your Own Hotel Room Class: There are a number of different “classes” you can do in the comfort of your hotel room! Try yoga and use a fluffy white towel as your mat (side note: our tips for cultivating an at-home practice can really help, here). Or check out some of these bodyweight workouts [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] that can be done with very little room and exactly zero props!
- Go the App Route: There are so many apps focused on fitness and workout tracking, the trick is just finding the right one that works for you while on the go! I love a few that focus on short workouts that are easy to incorporate in any part of your day like 7 Minute Workout, the 100 Pushups plan, and Seven. (If you’re looking for lots more short-form apps, check out this review of more than 30!) For longer workouts, I’ve had the most success with Fitbit Coach and Gaiam’s Yoga Studio, though many from this list are on my “to try” list in the future!
