Last month, I traveled to Columbus, OH for my cousin’s wedding. We spent a lot of time at wedding events and with family but I still walked away with a few favorite spots and a slew of new places that I’m adding to my list for a return trip.
When to Go
We traveled to Columbus in May and ended up having very pleasant weather (a little rainy but not too cold). But I was told by my family that lives there year round that we easily could have ended up having snow that weekend! I’ve also traveled to Ohio in June before and it was a little bit warmer so I’d try for that when planning a return trip.
How to Get There
We flew into the Columbus airport which is small and easy to navigate. There are several airports nearby if you are exploring other cities during your travels. We moved around the city by car and found it easy to navigate. Just keep an eye on those one-way streets in downtown and be careful of the lack of street lights in German Village.
Where to Eat
By far our favorite spot was the Fox in the Snow bakery. We went twice during our trip for hot breakfast sandwiches and lattes and got pastries to go on a third trip.
We also traveled outside of the city to go to Brewdog Brewery and it was very impressive. They have a ton of outdoor space including a huge dog park and outdoor seating. The inside includes a museum and a very cool lego display of the building.
We could have spent hours there exploring everything. The food was great. I had a pizza and my husband ordered a salad. But our huge group of lunch-goers also ordered a ton of appetizers and many other great selections from the menu. It’s a great spot for a big group of people to enjoy and hang out.
I am very excited to plan a return trip to stay at the brewery’s hotel! The room comes with a shower beer fridge, need I say more?!
What to Do
We stayed with one of my cousins at his house in German Village and it was by far my favorite part of the city. I loved walking around Schiller Park and looking at all of the beautiful houses.
German Village regulates the businesses so that even Starbucks feels less corporate because the sign is so small and it’s in a brick building that blends right in.
We didn’t spend a lot of time doing actual “activities” but I did have one big shout out that I wanted to give to The Book Loft. This unique bookstore includes 32 rooms filled top to bottom with unique and mainstream finds. Don’t worry, they’ll give you a map when you arrive. We easily could have spent hours going through each room and picking out something in every category.
Has anyone else been to Columbus recently, what are your top spots that I should check out on a return trip? Let us know in the comments!
Next time you are in Columbus try Schmidt’s and Katzinger’s. Both are in the German Village. Thanks for sharing
