A few weekends ago I met up with Laura in New York City for a quick trip for one of her best friend’s wedding. I was working (wedding coordinating = my favorite side hustle) so my time in the city was limited. I took a red-eye on Thursday night, worked all day Saturday and was back on a plane by Sunday. So I really only had Friday to myself. If you have more time, check out Laura’s longer post about spending a week. Since my free time equaled just about 24 hours, I am writing a quick post about what to do with only a day in the city.
The Sights
One of the best ways to see the city is by walking around. My favorite place to walk in New York is The High Line. A close second is Central Park. If you need a quick work out during your trip, avoid the gym classes (they. are. so. expensive.) and just go for a run in the park.
The Food
Carbs are your priority when you are in New York. The bread is just better. Have a bagel for breakfast, falafel cart for lunch and slice of pizza before you leave. If you only have a little time, these foods are great for eating on the go.
The Entertainment
If you get into the city early (thanks red-eye fights!), head right for Times Square and see if you can get rush tickets for a Broadway show. You can also check out the app/site TodayTix for discounted seats and lotteries. Even if you don’t manage to snag a deal, this is just a better time to see the most touristy part of the city. In the early morning, you’ll be able to walk around and see the famous spot without dealing with a rush of humans in every direction.
The Souvenirs
My favorite souvenirs are always food related. Grab a few black and white cookies for your friends back home or some chocolate babka for your office. You’ll be a hero.
Pro-Tip:
Hotel lobby restrooms are your best friend. No one notices or cares if you sneak in and just use the restroom and it is way better than any public restroom you might find or place you’d have to purchase something.
Has anyone else been to NYC lately? What are your favorite spots?
LOVE NY! My favorite first thing to do is to j-walk. Such hilarious banter with cabbies! In LA they ticket for that…but in NYC, at least all the times I was there…..it was a ridiculously silly thrill! We all did it. Easily amused! Cheers and I hope the wedding was wonderful!!! 😄
I am just like you in the fact that most of my go-to places are for food. For me, a trip to NYC isn’t quite complete without a pastrami sandwich from Katz deli. Ugh, so good.
Agreed! Katz Deli is soooo gooood, I haven’t been there in years. Bookmarking for my next trip. I’ll be back at the end of this month so luckily don’t have to wait long!
